Lovale Initiation - "A Dying Ritual"

While on our trips to Africa over the years - particularly Zambia, Angola and the Dem. Rep of Congo, we have come to see how the traditions and customs are changing and dying. Poverty, disease, and the globalization of the "modern way of life"  are having a major impact on local culture and custom.

Victor Kayombo, a Lovale representative in western Zambia, suggested we bring the art and culture of his people to the world. The idea took roots immediately. Although research has been done in this field (Marie-Louise Bastin, and Manuel Jordán), we still feel there is room for our project which will be specific to Lovale initiation. By presenting the masks, sculptures, stools, and artifacts used during the "mukanda" we will hopefully manage to show and record this dying practice. This project is still in its infancy and will be ongoing over the next year or two. We have started collecting artwork and information, and will continue to do so. With the guide and help of our friends in Africa we will hopefully succeed in this endeavor.
