Makishi costumes of the mukanda

These three costumes are stunning specimens that have been used in the ceremonies we have experienced. They were collected over a period of years and are part of our own collection.

Pwevo - Lovale/Luchazi in origin.

This costume represents Pwevo. Pwevo represents a mythical female personage who died young. Pwevo is the ideal in young female beauty. The mask measures 9 x 8 x 13 inches and is decorated with beads and other ornaments. The hair which is of rubber strips measures 16 inches in length. The costume is made of woven fibers. The arms measure 28 x 6 x 1 inches. The legs measure 30 x 7x 1 inches. The feet are made from old rubber soles. (view more detailed description here)
